Trainers created from ocean waste

Adidas have created a shoe made of recycled plastic from ocean waste, to do this they have teamed up with Parley for the Oceans, an organisation dedicated to reducing plastic waste in the oceans.

Last year Adidas created a prototype using a 3D printer which aimed to show how the industry could ‘rethink design and help stop ocean plastic pollution.

They are now making actual pairs of the trainers available for purchase. Around 7,000 pairs will be created and sold in stores and online for $220 starting from the middle of this month.

The trainer has an ‘upper’ made of 95% ocean plastic, which was retrieved from near the Maldives and the rest of the shoes is made from largely recycled materials too.

Although initially only 7,000 pairs have been made the company are aiming to manufacture a millions pairs next year with their ultimate goal to eliminate virgin plastic from their supply chain.
