The art of pre-cycling

We’re all well aware of the benefits of recycling and the needs of the planet to cut our waste. As with anything prevention is much better than cure, so what about the idea of pre-cycling rather than re-cycling?

The idea of pre-cycling works in answer to the question of how we can reduce what we throw away and reduce the need for recycling. Indeed, pre-cycling may become one of the next buzz words, but how do you go about practicing it?

Precycling is reducing waste by not acquiring it in the first place (even if it is recyclable).  In other words, being thoughtful at the point of purchase in addition to at the point of throwing out.   Precycling saves precious natural resources, helps with greenhouse gas reduction and can save you money.  Here are some ideas to get you started –

Purchase the service rather than a thing that you will throw out or need to recycle –

  • Reading your news online instead of buying a newspaper
  • Read books online or on a wireless reading device like a Kindle or the Sony e-book
  • Using a video service like Netflix instead of owning movies
  • Give a gift of an experience rather than a thing. For example – movie tickets, dinner gift certificate etc
  • Buy music online rather than on a cd
  • Rent or borrow things whenever possible rather than purchase
  • Share a lawn mower with several neighbors rather than each household owning their own
  • Use a lawn service so that you don’t need to purchase lawn equipment

Get into re-usability –

  • Take a re-useable mug to where you buy your take-away coffee instead of taking the drink in their paper cup.
  • Use a re-useable water bottle on the go rather than buying bottled water
  • Take your own cloth bags to the grocery store or supermarket
  • Store left-overs in durable re-useable glass containers
  • Avoid disposables and choose re-useable or refillable products such as a refillable razor
  • Use a permanent coffee filter
  • Use a sponge instead of paper towel
  • Buy rechargeable batteries now the technology and price point have both improved

Avoid packaging –

  • Buy in bulk whenever possible
  • Buy local because not only less transportation is involved but less packaging too
  • Use a bar of soap instead of liquid soap that has a container
  • Buy a block of cream cheese rather than a tub
  • Shop at a Farmers Market where there is minimal package from farm to your table

These ideas simply represent a few suggestions as to how pre-cycling might work. Some of them might not applicable or feasible but I’m sure you get the gist! There are probably also a number of other ways that pre-cycling might work for you, there’s certainly nothing wrong with being creative and making your own list of things to try.

Some of the suggestions above promote the use of electronic equipment which of course from time to time breaks down and eventually becomes obsolete. This where Recycle IT 4 U can help.

RecycleIT4U offer a fast, efficient and friendly service to help recycle your unwanted electrical goods with a simple automated collection system.
To book a collection you can either use our online form or you can speak to us direct during our normal office hours. Our collection booking telephone number is 01952 580814.

We will collect redundant PCs, laptops, monitors, servers, network products, printers, EPOS, Scanners, UPS, cabling, AV equipment, projectors, telephones, mobiles and fax machines using our own vehicles at an agreed date and time.

An official WEEE disposal certificate will be issued, quoting serial number, asset tag and
description of all the items collected.

Hazardous waste notes will be issued for redundant equipment such as monitors and batteries that contain hazardous materials.

We can also ensure secure data destruction. The security of unwanted data held on file by way of magnetic media, computer hard drives,
backup tapes, CD’s or floppy drives is controlled by the Data Protection Act 1998. All data bearing devices are dealt with by Recycle IT 4U in one of two ways:-

  • Physical shredding
  • Electronic wiping of DATA (only applicable if approved by you the customer)

Data held on hard drives is removed or eradicated using approved software and hardware in accordance with internationally recognised standards.

We also pride ourselves in refurbishing, reusing and recycling for spares and repairs as much as possible, so equipment can have a second lease of life.

Any equipment not suitable for our refurbishment programme or spares, is separated and then sent in bulk to our Strategic Partner, the world’s largest waste management company for further recycling and separation into glass, metal and plastics and reintroduced into the manufacturing chain as raw materials.
