Tesco to remove some best before dates to reduce food waste

Food waste

Tesco have revealed that they have plans to remove the best before dates from nearly 70 fruit and vegetable items including apples, potatoes, tomatoes, lemons and onions in a bid to reduce food waste.

They have made their decision based on research by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, which found that less than half of people asked fully understood the best before date. The best before date is a quality indicator and shows that  food may not be at its best but is still edible.

Tesco have said that they ‘made this change to fruit and vegetable packaging as they are among the most wasted foods’. It also supports Tesco pledge made in 2017 to become the first UK retailer to stop throwing away food suitable for human consumption.
