Takeaway coffee cups could each take 30 years to breakdown.

Coffee cups

Campaigners are calling for a more eco-friendly alternative to the current takeaway coffee cups and a tax on paper and plastic cups as the majority are not recyclable.

Britain’s coffee addicts are leaving a mountain of waste in the shape of none recyclable coffee cups which experts believe could take decades to breakdown. Many people wrongly believe that the cups are recyclable, however whilst the paper is recyclable many recycling centres do not have the facilities to remove the plastic liner which makes the cups waterproof. Without the plastic liner its believed the cups could still take up to 2 years to break down due to the quality of the paper, however with the liner many experts believe the breakdown could take anything up to 30 years.

For health and safety reasons the paper used in coffee cups must be brand new causing the claim that it takes at least 100,000 trees each year to fuel Britain’s coffee habit. Last week the Liberal Democrats called for a 5p tax on coffee cups after the success of the plastic bag tax.
