Its estimated that 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas is produced when old Christmas trees are sent to landfill, however pine needles can now be turned into industrial materials.

The UK  uses up to 8 million Christmas trees each year with around 7 million ending up in landfill. These trees have hundreds and thousands of pine needles which take a long time to decompose. A better idea would be to reuse the pine needles and the trees.

By a process called liquefaction pine needles can be converted into a liquid with a solid by product called bio-char, this process uses moderate temperatures and environmentally friendly solvents. The liquid product is made from glucose which can be used in the production of sweeteners for food, acetic acid for the making of paint and phenol for medicines. The bio-char can be used as a catalyst for other chemical reactions meaning none of the products are wasted.
