Some believe that the alternatives to plastic packaging could be causing more harm than good. The race is on to develop a material that can take the place of oil-based plastics which have a huge effect on the oceans, wild life and also public health.

As the range of alternative material grows, such as shrimp shells and algae, so do concerns about consumer confusion and greenwash. Campaigners are warning that these alternatives aren’t a magic solution for the plastic crisis.

It’s believed that the confusing range of labels on these bioplastic alternatives can leave consumers unsure of what to do with them once they have finished with them. Most compostable plastics need to be sent to an industrial composting facility despite what many people think. Although many of these alternatives can be recycled many times over they also can take centuries to breakdown if disposed of incorrectly.
