A new pop up restaurant in London, called Food Ink, is serving only 3D printed food to its customers. Not only that but everything in the restaurant from the furniture to the menus, cutlery to the light fittings will also be created by 3D printing. Food Ink says that ‘their mission is to explore the overlap between dining and technology to enhance the users experience.’

During the day customers are invited into the restaurant to try 3D printed snacks. Then at night they are offered a nine-course dinner menu, which of course is also created by 3D printing. The menu which is designed by an ex El Bull chef includes items such as Air Caviar, Fish and Chips, Steak Tartris and Love Bites. The menu will be printed to order but will set customers back a huge £250 per head.

The 3D printer used is made by ‘byFlo’ and can only process materials in the form of paste. Sasha Mathers, Communications Director at Food Ink said ‘For now, the primary material has to take the form of a paste, because it is extruded through the byFlo cartridge needle in the same way a chef would, through a pastry bag. The robotic limb has greater precision that any human hand, however, it also facilitates control of the molecular gastronomy of the printed food.’

To add to the technology element of the restaurant experience there will also be virtual reality headsets, wall-to-wall visual projections and artificial intelligence composed music. For those who can’t get to the restaurant the event will be live streamed via their website.
