McDonald’s, the famous fast-food chain have said that their use of plastic straws in Britain will go by 2019 after nearly half a million customers called on the company to remove them.

The company use around 1.8 million straws a day in the UK, the switch will affect 1,361 outlets in the UK but not however the other 36,000 restaurants worldwide. McDonald’s say they will begin phasing out the plastic straws from September.

The paper straws will be sourced from suppliers in Northern Ireland and Wales. Only a small number of restaurants will have facilities to recycle the paper straws initially but they believe this will be available in all stores by the end of 2019.

Alternatives to plastic straws will also eventually be tested in McDonalds in other countries including the US, France, Sweden and Norway.
