Most of us have some form of old technology lying about at home whether that be a phone. laptop or tablet. Instead of throwing it into the bin, which is bad for the environment or just leaving it sitting in a draw, here are some ideas of how those old pieces of technology can still be used.
Firstly old phones or tablets can be used as a clock and/or an alarm clock, either though the native app or a separate app you’ve downloads. If the device is plugged in by your bed you wont need to worry about its battery life either.
How about a home security camera? Using WiFi and the camera built into your device you can turn it into a security camera to keep watch on your home. Apps such as Presence or Manything will help you to do this. This device could also be used to video call home or check up on your pets whilst at work.
E-readers are very popular and a simple e-reader app should work on the majority of devices no matter how slow they have become. There are a number of apps that can help you achieve this whether you are using an old computer or an out of date smartphone.
Another use would be as a music player whether that be via a radio app, streaming music from Spotify or from a playlist on ITunes. You could connect it to a set of Bluetooth speakers or fix the device with some Sonos hardware and install the accompanying apps. You could then play music through wireless speakers with your repurpose hardware acting as the hub.
Other uses include a media library to store movies, TV shows and music or a word processor. There are many processing programs out there that will allow you to do this.
However if none of these appeal you can recycle your devices. When choosing your recycling company just consider that they should make sure the electronics and materials used in your old gadgets are disposed of in a way that is kind to the environment.
