Could bins now only be collected once every 4 weeks?

Trash bins in Regensburg

Trials are currently taking place in which bins are only to be collected once every 4 weeks in an effort to increase recycling.

The trial is taking place in Conway, North Wales and aims to cut the councils £1.75m annual bill for disposing of waste. Recycling and food waste will be collected weekly.

The council had found that over a year, more than half the items placed in black bins could have been recycled. Conway councillor Dave Cowans said the response to the decision had been ‘quietly positive’. He said that after speaking to other councils who had introduced three-weekly collections many of them wish they had taken it to four. When asked if he thought the scheme should be introduced nation wide his response was ‘It’s recognised that to be green is good and a public body needs to recognise that. But we would have pursued this anyway. No sensible council could ever justify wasting £1.7 m of public money.’ However conservative Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar described the plans as ‘absolutely ridiculous’ and claimed it would lead to fly tipping.
