The Charge Up Safety campaign has been launched by an Organisation called Call2Recycle Inc, this campaign aims to raise awareness of safe collection and shipping practices of batteries.
The company Call2Recycle Inc, whose headquarters are based in Atlanta, collects and recycles single-use and rechargeable batteries under 5 Kilos. They have diverted around 130 million kilograms from landfills in the past 21 years. The company say safety-related and fire incidents have been making headlines with many incidents believed to have been traced to batteries.
Call2Recycle have released a new safety portal on how to safely recycle and ship batteries. There will be online training and instructions on how best to handle damaged batteries. Organisations who don’t follow the policies may be suspended from the program. The companies CEO and president Carl Smith said “Our No. 1 objective as an organization is the safe collection and recycling of batteries. We are launching Charge up Safety to ensure that the importance of safety isn’t forgotten in our commitment to sustain the environment.”
Smith continues, “Preventing accidents can be as simple as educating people to take the time to simply bag or tape each battery prior to dropping it off in the recycling box or before a box is shipped. Charge Up Safety is about continually assessing and enhancing our safety and compliance practices to ensure new safety policies are being embraced across our collection and recycling network.”
