After looking at Coca Cola’s new recycling advert campaign on our last blog the company have now stated that they will increase the amount of recycled plastic in its bottles to 50%. This doubles the amount from the previous 25% that was used. The company believe this target can be reached by 2020.

One million plastic bottles are purchased worldwide every minute this gives a total of 480 billion each year. Around 100 billion of these are believed to be Coca Cola bottles.

Coca cola who also own brands including Fanta, Sprite and Schweppes said they will invest millions of pounds in buying recycled plastic in order to meet its new target. This means that a Coca Cola bottle could be recycled and returned to the shelf in its new form within six weeks.

However campaigners say drinks companies do not want to use 100 per cent recycled bottles because they do not look as good and brands fear they may put consumers off.

Coca Cola bottles are currently recyclable however very few are actually recycled. In the UK almost half of bottles used are not recycled.
