China ban imported foreign waste

China have announced plans to ban imports of 24 grades of rubbish, reducing the tonnes of world’s waste it imports to feed its recycling industry. Its believed that last year China imported 7.3 million tonnes of plastic waste and 27 million tonnes of waste paper,  from countries including Japan, USA and also many places in Europe. The ban is expected to come into effect by January next year.

Here in the UK, an environment minister has said that China’s plan may present an opportunity for the UK. Therese Coffey said she understood the plans were “a headache” but challenged the UK to improve the quality of its waste and reprocess more at home. However Caroline Lucas, co-leader of the Green Party and MP for Brighton Pavilion, questioned the government’s sense of urgency.
