By stripping down and recycling old iPhones, iPads and Macbooks, Apple have recovered huge quantities of gold. They revealed they have reclaimed almost one tonne of gold by recycling products in 2015. Using the current price of gold that is equivalent to £28 million worth.
The figure was revealed as Apple released their environmental responsibility report, this report details the results of the companies Eco Friendly efforts for the past year.
In total 61,357,000lbs of material was recovered for reuse. This not only included almost one tonne of gold but also three tonne of silver worth £1.1 million and over 1,300 tonnes of copper.
The material was reclaimed through the Apple Renew scheme; this scheme lets customer’s hand in their worn out Apple devices in exchange for money off future products bought.
Some of the recycling is done by Apples line of prototype ‘Liam’ Robot. This robot is designed to take apart the old Apple devices while at the same time detecting and separating the materials for their valuable elements.
The company don’t use gold in their products to be extravagant; it’s used because it’s an excellent conductor. Also it doesn’t tend to corrode or oxidise like other metals such as copper or aluminium.
The report also revealed other areas where Apple are trying to reduce its carbon footprint. The iPhone 6s has sleeker packaging, which is 20% lighter and 34% smaller than the box of the first generation iPhone. The company’s data centres power services like iMessages, Siri and Facetime, run on renewable energy. Apples Carbon Footprint emissions have fallen every year since 2011 from 137.2kg of CO2 per product to 114.2kg in 2015.
